If you ever felt some disquiet at he way Cesar Milan uses his misconception of "domination" as the cornerstone of his understanding of dog behavior and his methods, you'll find this book refreshing.Paul Owens may be a little more new-age and touchy-feelly than I would normally tolerate, but you can't deny that he truly cares about dogs and has developed an approach to training good life habits for dogs and owners alike.
His approach starts by turning from solving "problems" to identifying results. Rather than "How can I stop the dog's XXX behavior", he asks "What do I want the dog to do?"
He eschews the long-discounted domination/aggression model of normal dog behavior. Instead he concentrates on first building a bond between the symbiotic inter-species pair, and then shaping the behavior of owner and dog through exercizes that can become lifelong habits for both partners.
As the human carefully developing habits of consistent behavior that anticipate normal but unwanted dog behaviors, the human learns to pay closer attention to the dog. The dog learns what the human will tolerate, and what he appreciates. Both partners turn daily activities into low stress routines that meet the needs of both partners.

The Dog Whisperer Presents Good Habits for Great Dogs edition by Paul Owens Norma Eckroate Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
I have read a few of The Dog Whispers books. I have a fantastic tibetian terrier that me and my husband trained on our own and we are not dog trainers. I am a firefighter and he works in the internet industry. Some things that we already did were in his book. I just received two 4 month old Llasa Apso's for my birthday so we are getting all the help we can. So far so good.
I love his no nonsense, positive approach. Also, to have fun with your dog! Dogs live in the moment and it is a great reminder for us to be present to ourselves and our dog.
Thanks to Paul Owens I have learnt so much from the pages in his book. After one day of following his system of 'reading' my dogs body language he (my dog not Paul!) now drops at command.....I spent months going to obedience training and he eventually followed commands but not like this - I look forward to having a great relationship now going forward - and my dog is an energetic, play all the time Jack Russell X!
I purchased this book to prepare for a positive training lecture. Awesome stuff. Well worth the six dollars the book was on sale for. Must have to add to your positive dog training library. However it had me explaining why I had a Dog Whisperer Book as most people associate that with Cesar.
This book, along with working in a class with the author has truly helped me to understand my puppy and how dogs learn, think, and helped "cement the trust" between human and dog. I'm now able to identify and fully appreciate all the steps, large and small, as our now adolescent pup matures into a "dependable" adult.
Good Habits for Great Dogs is a wonderful, common sense aproach to solving everyday problems that people encounter with their dogs. Most of the time dog owners unknowingly create their own problems and then don't understand why their dogs do things that annoy them and complicate their lives. This book offers very simple, logical fixes by having the owners change small things in their own behavior first. I help people learn to train their dogs and I love the easy solutions in this book. Paul Owens has a terrific approach to training and I love his books.
I'm a big fan of the "other" dog whisperer on NatGEO TV, and have put a lot of his information to work in sucessfully training both our easy-go Dane/Lab mix, and our stubborn Bulldog/Boxer mix.
But, I'd been thinking recently the Bulldog mix might respond better to all-positive training methods (he was a rescue, potentially treated badly, and his brain turns off and he goes into avoidance mode easily), so I was looking for some guidance on how to make that work. THIS BOOK IS IT! Great ideas on how to get your dog's attention, keep it, bond together, and get what you want - all in a positive environment.
We're just starting on the methods in the book, but so far, our dogs are having a great time - and if the bulldog starts to think training and doing what "I" want is pure FUN and rewarding in itself, I think we'll be more than halfway there.
The book not only tells you how to plan and execute your training - but also what to do when your dog doesn't 'follow the plan'... which is a great help - especially with Mr. Stubborn in our house.
Great book!
